The Belfry Community Choir

led by Susie Thomson

The Belfry Community Choir was started in January 2018 because the Belfry Arts Centre felt there was a need to have a place where anyone could come and enjoy the experience of singing in a choir.  We started out as a small group of dedicated singers but have grown substantially over the last 2 years with the emphasis on being a Community Choir which nurtures and supports its members. Although we meet weekly there is no pressure to make all of the rehearsals. Our aim is to provide a welcoming, fun and uplifting environment!

We all meet at 7:00pm at the Belfry Centre for Music and Arts (Overstrand) and practise until 8:00pm. We then have a break until 8:15pm/8:20pm and then run until 9:00pm. In the break we have tea and coffee and members take turns to bring in cake and biscuits or homemade treats.

Each rehearsal is £4.00 which covers the hire of the venue, music & our musical director's fee.

Here is the opening song from the Overstrand County Festival

Everything stops for tea

We rehearse on Sundays from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at The Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand, NR27 0NT
The rehearsals follow a simple format of gentle vocal warm ups, followed by work on current repetoire. The focus is on enjoying the physical process of singing. It really does have a positive effect on people's mental and physical health! Our rehearsals always end with us singing an african lullaby acapella to close our time together and to wish each other well for the week.
We like to sing a wide variety of music from unison to four part harmony.
We enjoy all styles of music but we tend to focus on:
  1. Music from Theatre and Films
  2. Golden Oldies
  3. Music from Different Cultures and Countries
  4. Folk and Traditional Music
Everyone is encouraged to make suggestions for the choir to learn different songs. This has been a very succesful!
It changes every year, but we usually perform around four concerts :
  1. Christmas
  2. Spring
  3. Summer
  4. Late Summer Concert and Picnic
Most concerts are performed at the Belfry Arts Centre, but we have also sung at other venues in North Norfolk.
